Jean-Louis Bonnard

Jean-Louis Bonnard was born on March 30, 1820, in the parish of Saint-Étienne, Lyon, France. His early life was marked by a profound sense of faith, which later spurred him on his missionary journey. After completing his studies at the seminary, Bonnard was ordained a priest in 1844. Inspired by the call to evangelize, he joined the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris, a congregation dedicated to spreading the Gospel in foreign lands, particularly in Asia.

In 1849, he arrived in Vietnam, a country that was experiencing severe persecution against Christians at the time. The Vietnamese government had outlawed Christianity, viewing it as a foreign influence that threatened their traditions and societal structure. Despite the dangers, Bonnard was committed to serving the people and sharing the love of Christ. He quickly adapted to the Vietnamese culture, learning the language and immersing himself in the local customs, which enabled him to connect deeply with the people.

Bonnard's life in Vietnam was filled with challenges. He faced arrests and had to go into hiding to protect himself from persecution. Yet, he continued to minister to those in need, offering spiritual guidance and support to the Christian community. He became a beacon of hope, often encouraging his flock to remain steadfast in their faith despite the trials they faced. His dedication was evident in his tireless efforts to evangelize and baptize new Christians, demonstrating a remarkable resilience and unwavering commitment to his mission.

Tragically, his missionary work came to an abrupt end on November 24, 1861, when he was captured by local authorities.
