Jean-Martin Moye

St. Jean-Martin Moye was born on March 12, 1730, in Tain-l’Hermitage, France. He entered the seminary at a young age, driven by a desire to serve God and spread the Gospel. He was ordained a priest from the diocese of Valence on December 18, 1756. Early in his ministry, Moye was influenced by the profound needs of the impoverished rural communities surrounding his parish. This deepened his commitment to missionary work and education, realizing that forming educated and faithful communities was essential for nurturing the faith.

In 1763, Moye responded to a call from the Society of Foreign Missions and committed to missionary work in the missions of France and abroad. His journey led him to China, where he began to lay the foundations for a deep, engaging evangelization. However, the political climate in China made mission work exceedingly difficult. Undeterred, he became a driving force in establishing training programs for future missionaries, emphasizing a model rooted in faith, education, and an understanding of local cultures.

Moye’s missionary zeal was exemplified during his time in China, where he endured significant hardships, including persecution and isolation. His resilience in the face of adversity made him not just a popular figure among the local populace but also a respected leader among fellow missionaries. He understood that to win hearts for Christ, he needed to meet people's educational needs and uplift their spirits. This led him to open schools that taught not only religious education but also practical skills.

After enduring years of trials and tribulations in China, Moye returned to France in 1774. Upon his return, he shifted his focus to organizing missionary efforts within his homeland, advocating for the need for awareness about the mission fields abroad. He worked diligently to raise funds, recruit volunteers, and spread the vision of missionary work to a broader audience. His efforts flourished, and many young men were inspired to take up missionary vocations.

St. Jean-Martin Moye eventually founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1819, emphasizing the importance of education in faith formation. His commitment to forming a dedicated group of educators was rooted in the belief that knowledge was a pathway to deeper faith and true discipleship in Christ.

Moye passed away on March 1, 1793. Though he faced many societal obstacles during his life, he remained steadfast in his devotion to his mission of spreading the Gospel and transforming lives through education. His legacy lives on, inspiring generations of missionaries and educators who continue to serve and evangelize. St. Jean-Martin Moye was canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 7, 1996, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the Church and the vital role he played in permeating education and evangelization into the hearts of the faithful.
