Joaquim Alves Brás

Joaquim Alves Brás was born on December 5, 1912, in the small town of Benfeita, Portugal. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, he was profoundly influenced by the strong faith exhibited by his parents and the community around him. From a young age, Joaquim felt a calling to the priesthood, realizing that his life's purpose would be to serve God and his fellow man.

After completing his studies in philosophy and theology, Joaquim was ordained a priest on June 9, 1935. He began his pastoral ministry in the diocese of Coimbra, where he demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the spiritual and physical well-being of his parishioners. Joaquim was known not only for his eloquent preaching but also for his deep compassion. He dedicated his life to education, catechesis, and social services, constantly striving to meet the needs of his community.

One of Joaquim's most notable contributions was establishing youth groups and educational programs aimed at fostering the spiritual growth of young people. He believed that nurturing faith in the younger generation was crucial for the future of the Church. He organized retreats, spiritual exercises, and various activities that encouraged these youth to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith.

As he grew older, Joaquim continued to serve his community with the same fervor he had shown in his youth. However, in the late 1990s, his health began to decline. Even as he faced the challenges of aging and illness, he remained active in pastoral duties as much as possible, demonstrating an admirable resilience and a deep sense of purpose.

Joaquim Alves Brás passed away on March 13, 2005, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. His life serves as a shining example of what it means to live in Christ and to serve others wholeheartedly. The impact of his ministry continues to be felt in the community, and he is remembered fondly by those whose lives he touched.

In 2021, the Church opened the cause for his beatification, recognizing his exemplary life of virtue and service. The faithful now look to him as a model of devotion and dedication to the Lord and to one another, as a priest who lived out the Gospel in practical and profound ways. His feast day is celebrated on March 13th, inviting all to remember and emulate the virtues he embodied throughout his life.
