Johannes Prassek

Johannes Prassek was born on March 2, 1911, in the small town of Hohenwestedt in the northern part of Germany. Raised in a Catholic family, he grew up in an environment that instilled in him the values of faith and service from a young age. After completing his secondary education, he pursued a vocation to the priesthood, entering the seminary in 1929. Prassek was ordained on March 29, 1936, and was assigned to serve in the parish of St. John in Hamburg, where he became known for his deep compassion and commitment to his community.

As the political landscape in Germany darkened under Nazi rule, Prassek’s resolve and moral conviction were tested. He witnessed the increasing persecution of Jews and those who opposed the regime, including fellow Christians. Recognizing the danger that silence could bring, Prassek courageously spoke out against the injustices occurring around him. He was deeply moved by the plight of the oppressed and sought to offer both spiritual and practical support to those in need. Through underground networks, he helped provide food and shelter to Jewish families and others targeted by the Nazis, understanding that such acts of defiance could lead to severe consequences.

His activities did not go unnoticed, and he was arrested by the Gestapo on January 21, 1943, after being betrayed by a Nazi sympathizer. Prassek faced interrogation and, despite the threats and torture, he remained steadfast in his faith and convictions. He was charged with treason for his actions, which included distributing pamphlets and aiding those persecuted by the regime. The trial that followed was a grim affair, revealing the harsh realities of the totalitarian state. On August 9, 1943, Johannes Prassek was sentenced to death.

He was executed by guillotine, and amidst his suffering, he consistently voiced his love for God and his commitment to Christ’s teachings. In his final moments, he reportedly encouraged his fellow prisoners not to lose hope and to remain faithful. His martyrdom not only exemplified his courage but also became a source of inspiration for many, illustrating the power of faith in the face of overwhelming evil.

Prassek’s legacy continues to resonate, particularly in Germany and among those committed to standing up against injustice. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1985, recognized as a symbol of truth and moral integrity during some of the darkest days of modern history. His feast day on November 10 is a reminder of the profound impact that one individual’s faith can have on the world—a call to emulate his courage and commitment to justice, even when faced with dire consequences.
