John Fenwick

John Fenwick was born in England in 1640, into a time of significant religious strife and conflict. He grew up in a family that remained steadfast in their Catholic faith, despite the increasing pressure against Catholics during the Protestant Reformation. Fenwick was educated at the Jesuit college in St. Omer, France, a center for English Catholics at the time. Here, he flourished academically and spiritually, developing a strong dedication to the Jesuit way of life.

After completing his studies, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1664 and was ordained a priest in 1675. Fenwick returned to England shortly thereafter, where he took up his mission work in the areas around the North East of England. This led to a wave of hysteria and persecution against Catholics. Fenwick was arrested on false charges of being involved in treasonous activities against the crown.
