John of La Verna

John of La Verna was born in 1185 in the region of Tuscany, Italy. His birth name was Giovanni di San Giorgio, and he came from a noble family that was markedly influential in his community. Despite the privileges that accompanied noble birth, John felt a calling that pulled him toward a life of simplicity and dedication to God. The influence of St. Francis of Assisi and the burgeoning Franciscan Order ignited a fervent desire in him to embrace the religious life.

While still in his youth, John experienced a deep spiritual awakening that led him to join the Franciscan Order around 1205.
