St. John of the Cross was born Juan de Yepes Alvarez on June 24, 1542, in Fontiveros, Spain. Around 1577, John faced severe opposition from fellow Carmelites who disagreed with the reform. He was imprisoned for nine months in Toledo, where he endured harsh conditions and mistreatment. These works explore the soul's journey toward God through the trials of detachment and purification.
