José María Arizmendiarrieta

José María Arizmendiarrieta was born on April 9, 1915, in the small Basque town of the same name in Spain. In 1956, he founded the first cooperative, ULGOR, which produced electric motors. This marked the beginning of what would later evolve into the Mondragon Corporation, a network of cooperatives that now spans various sectors, including industry, finance, and retail. The Mondragon model was revolutionary in emphasizing worker participation, shared ownership, and the importance of education and training for personal and communal development. Its success has become an inspirational model for cooperative movements worldwide.

Despite his achievements, José María faced challenges in his work. He experienced opposition from traditional industries and had to navigate socio-political tensions within the region. Yet, undeterred, he continued to advocate for a system in which human dignity and community relationships were prioritized over sheer profit.
