The Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, and tensions escalated as anti-Christian sentiment flourished. During this tumultuous period, José Ramón, alongside many other religious figures, faced the growing threat of violence and persecution. Despite the danger, he remained steadfast in his ministry, offering comfort and support to his community in whatever ways he could.

Tragically, in September 1936, as the violence against religious leaders intensified, José Ramón was captured by anti-Catholic forces. He was imprisoned for his faith and his dedication to the Church, enduring harsh treatment and the looming threat of execution. Throughout this time, he displayed remarkable courage and resilience, embodying the Christian ideals of love and forgiveness, even towards his captors. His unwavering faith became a source of strength for many fellow prisoners, who found inspiration in his steadfastness.

On September 22, 1936, José Ramón was executed along with other martyrs, becoming a poignant symbol of faith and sacrifice during a time of great suffering for the Church in Spain. His martyrdom not only represents his personal conviction but also highlights the courageous testimony of all those who suffered for their faith during the civil war. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2001, as part of a larger group of martyrs who died for their faith during this period.
