José Richard Diez OAR was born on November 18, 1880, in the small town of Alcañiz, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep commitment to his faith and a desire to serve God. Inspired by the life of Saint Augustine, he joined the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR) and took his vows in 1899. His passion for religious life was evident as he dedicated himself to prayer, study, and community life.
In 1901, Father José was ordained a priest, marking the beginning of a lifelong vocation that would take him far from home. He was sent as a missionary to the Philippines in 1905, where he served the communities with compassion and dedication. His work extended beyond spiritual guidance; he was deeply involved in education, helping to establish schools for children and encouraging the youth to develop a strong moral foundation rooted in the Catholic faith.
Father José's missionary efforts were characterized by a fervent commitment to the people he served. He traveled extensively throughout the islands, often facing challenging conditions.
