José Tristany Pujol

José Tristany Pujol was born in 1884 in a small town in Catalonia, Spain. From an early age, he exhibited a deep sense of spirituality, often engaging in prayer and reflection, which set him apart from his peers. He felt a calling to the monastic life, and in search of a community that would allow him to grow in holiness, he joined the Order of the Servants of Mary, also known as the Servites.

During his time in the Servite community, José dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service. He spent many hours in the chapel, meditating and seeking God's guidance. His fellow monks admired his piety, often describing him as having a serene presence filled with an undeniable love for Christ and His Church. The commitment to community life was central to his spirituality; he believed in the power of shared faith and mutual support among his brothers in Christ.

Despite his deep commitment to God, Joseph faced numerous challenges throughout his religious life. One of the most significant trials came during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a period marked by widespread persecution of religious communities. José and his fellow monks were subjected to intense scrutiny and hostility as the anti-religious sentiment grew stronger. Many Servite monasteries were closed or destroyed, and monks were forced to go into hiding or flee to safer regions.

In 1936, after persistent threats and the increasing violence surrounding his community, José was forced to leave his monastery. He fled to various locations, seeking refuge and continuing his prayer life amidst chaos. Even in hiding, he was known for his compassion toward others, often assisting those in need, including the ill and destitute, reflecting Christ’s love in action despite his own suffering.

Tragically, he was captured during this perilous time and eventually martyred in 1937 for refusing to renounce his faith. His unwavering devotion to God in the face of persecution became a source of inspiration for many. His sacrifice was emblematic of his deep conviction and was a powerful testament to his faith.

José's legacy lives on through the many who have been inspired by his life and martyrdom. The Church recognizes him as a model of steadfast faith and courage in the face of adversity. His feast day on November 6 gives the faithful an opportunity to reflect on his life and to seek his intercession, encouraging all to deepen their own faith journeys and to emulate his love for God and neighbor.
