Joseph Vaz

Joseph Vaz was born on April 21, 1651, in the small village of Benaulim in Goa, India. He was the son of a prosperous merchant family, which provided him with the means to receive a good education. Early in life, Joseph developed a deep spiritual devotion, influenced by the popular religious movements of his time. At the age of 17, he entered the seminary, and after completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in 1676.

Following his ordination, Joseph initially served in his home diocese. However, he soon felt a calling to serve as a missionary, particularly after learning about the plight of Christians in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) under Dutch colonial rule. The Dutch had established a severe anti-Catholic policy, leading to persecution and oppression of the faithful. This injustice stirred something profound within Joseph, motivating him to leave the comfort of his homeland and venture into the turmoil of Ceylon.

In 1687, Joseph Vaz arrived in Ceylon disguised as a beggar to evade capture by the Dutch authorities. He was determined to reconnect with the Catholic community there and revitalize their faith. The challenges he faced were immense: many of the Catholics were in despair, and some had even abandoned their beliefs. Nevertheless, Joseph's unwavering spirit and pastoral care soon began to inspire hope among the people.

He traveled throughout the island, often in secret, celebrating Mass, administering sacraments, and preaching the Gospel. His efforts were not without suffering; he endured physical hardships, including hunger, exhaustion, and constant threats of arrest. Despite these challenges, Joseph remained steadfast, embodying the virtues of humility, perseverance, and deep faith in God. He took great risks to encourage the faithful to practice their religion openly and to support those who had become disillusioned with the Church.

Among the many challenges Joseph faced was the need for establishing a community of clergy in Ceylon. Understanding that a revival of the Catholic Church needed a strong local leadership, he trained local catechists and priests, empowering them to lead their communities. This dedication laid the groundwork for a thriving Catholic Church in Sri Lanka, ensuring the continuation of the faith beyond his own lifetime.

Joseph Vaz was also known for the numerous miracles attributed to his intercession. Stories of his compassion, willingness to help those in need, and miraculous healings spread rapidly, reinforcing the faith of the people and drawing others to Christianity. His legacy not only included the revival of Catholicism in Sri Lanka but also the deep ties he formed with local cultures and traditions.

He died on January 16, 1711, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, beloved by the local people and mourned by his fellow clergy. His selfless dedication to the mission field left an indelible mark on Sri Lankan Christianity.

In 1748, Joseph Vaz was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV, and he was canonized by Pope Francis on January 14, 2015, a testament to the enduring impact of his life and work. Today, he is celebrated as the "Apostle of Sri Lanka" and is a patron saint for those involved in missionary work, revered not only for his missionary zeal but also for his commitment to love, compassion, and the unyielding practice of faith amidst persecution. His feast day is celebrated on January 16, the anniversary of his death, serving as a reminder of his commitment to the Gospel and dedication to the people he served.
