Joseph Zhang Wenlan

Joseph Zhang Wenlan was born in 1819 in the region of Shanxi, China, into a family of deep faith and a burgeoning Christian community. From a young age, he showed an earnest commitment to his Catholic faith, which was nurtured by his parents and the local priests. His devotion to God led him to become increasingly involved in church activities, and he demonstrated a remarkable resilience in the face of societal pressures against Christians during that era.

The 19th century in China was marked by widespread persecution of Christians. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, an intense wave of anti-Christian sentiment swept through the nation. Joseph, already an adult and an active member within his community, became well known for his unwavering faith and courage. He helped support fellow Christians who were facing harassment, putting himself at significant risk. The hostile environment reached a critical point when, in June 1900, Boxers began targeting Christians explicitly. Joseph was captured and taken prisoner along with many other Christians.
