Justin de Jacobis

St. Justin de Jacobis was born on January 9, 1800, in the small town of Palena, Italy. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong faith and a desire to serve God, which would ultimately shape his future. After entering the seminary, he was ordained a priest in 1825 and soon became steeped in the teachings of the Church, developing a particular passion for missionary work.

In 1835, his life took a pivotal turn when he was sent as a missionary to Ethiopia. This assignment was not only a journey to a distant land but also a commitment to share the Gospel with people who had a deep-rooted understanding of their own traditions and beliefs. Upon arriving in Ethiopia, he encountered a rich tapestry of cultural and religious diversity that profoundly shaped his ministry.

Justin quickly learned the Amharic language and adopted local customs, earning the respect and trust of the Ethiopian people. His dedication to the Gospel was evident as he worked tirelessly to establish a Catholic presence, even in the face of hostility and misunderstanding. He was instrumental in fostering dialogues between the Catholic Church and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, emphasizing mutual respect and the importance of unity in Christ.

Despite numerous hardships, including resistance from local authorities and the challenges of adapting to a different culture, Justin remained steadfast in his mission. Throughout his episcopacy, Justin faced significant trials, including political upheaval and persecution. In 1977, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI, and later canonized in 1979.
