Luis Masferrer Vila

Luis Masferrer Vila was born on March 6, 1915, in the town of Vilafranca del Penedès, Spain. Growing up in a devout family, he felt a profound call to the priesthood from an early age. After completing his ecclesiastical studies, he was ordained as a priest on March 12, 1938, amidst a time of great turmoil and conflict in Spain, specifically during the Spanish Civil War. His early ministry was characterized by fervent dedication to his parishioners and a deep commitment to his faith, as he sought to serve the spiritual needs of his community despite the surrounding violence and instability.

As the civil war progressed, the situation for clergy became increasingly dangerous. The anti-Catholic sentiment grew, and many priests faced persecution. Father Luis remained undeterred, continuing to minister to the faithful, providing them with consolation and guidance in their time of crisis. His courage shone brightly, as he often chose to remain in areas that were under threat, determined to serve those in need and to offer the sacraments, even when it posed a significant risk to his own life.

In the summer of 1936, Father Luis was arrested by Republican forces due to his religious vocation. He was taken to a prison where he endured harsh treatment along with other clergy members. The circumstances of his imprisonment were dire, marked by deprivation and fear. Yet, even in these harrowing conditions, he remained a beacon of hope, encouraging his fellow inmates to retain their faith. Luis's martyrdom occurred on August 15, 1936, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. He was executed by a firing squad in the town of Manresa, near Barcelona.
