Margherita Occhiena

Margherita Occhiena, affectionately known as "Mama Margaret," was born on April 1, 1788, in the small village of Castlenuovo di Asti in northern Italy. From a young age, Margherita displayed a nurturing spirit and a strong faith that would guide her throughout her life. Raised in a devout family, she learned the importance of prayer and service to others, laying the foundation for her future role as a mother and a mentor.

In 1811, Margherita married Francesco Occhiena, a carpenter, and together they welcomed several children into the world. Tragically, her husband passed away when her children were still young, leaving her to raise them alone. This period of her life tested her resilience, yet Margherita embraced her responsibilities with unwavering dedication. She instilled in her children the values of hard work, faith, and compassion, demonstrating her belief that family life was a ministry in itself.

Margherita’s most significant legacy is her role in the life of St. John Bosco, her son, who would go on to become a renowned priest and educator. She played a pivotal part in shaping his character and spiritual upbringing. Recognizing his calling from a young age, she supported him in his mission to help the youth of his time, sacrificing her own needs for the sake of her son’s vocation. Her home became a haven for children in need, where they were welcomed and taught moral values through love and care.

Throughout her life, Margherita was known for her gentleness and kindness. She had a profound understanding of human struggles and was always ready to offer support and encouragement to those in her community. She believed in the power of education and was committed to improving the lives of young people, which aligned perfectly with her son’s vision of establishing the Salesian order.

Margherita's life was not without its difficulties, but she remained steadfast in her faith. Her dedication to her family, her unwavering support for her son’s mission, and her tireless efforts to provide for the needy are testimony to her character.

She passed away on November 25, 1856, in Turin, surrounded by her loved ones. Her death was a profound loss for her family and the many lives she had touched throughout her years. In recognition of her virtuous life and her influence on the Salesian movement, Pope Pius XI beatified her in 1934, honoring her as a model of motherhood and faith.

Today, Margherita Occhiena is remembered not only as the mother of St. John Bosco but also as a beacon of maternal love, compassion, and dedicated service to God and family. Her feast day, celebrated on November 25, is a fitting occasion to reflect on the virtues she embodied and the legacy she left for future generations. Through her example, families are encouraged to embrace love, nurture faith, and cultivate a spirit of generosity in their own households.
