Maria Cristina Brando

Maria Cristina Brando was born on July 21, 1808, in a small village near Turin, Italy. Growing up in a devout family, she was deeply influenced by her parents' faith and their commitment to serving others. From an early age, Maria Cristina exhibited a profound empathy for the poor and marginalized, often caring for the sick and assisting her family in charitable endeavors.

In her late teens, she felt a strong call to devote her life to God and serve those in need. After discerning her vocation, she joined the Order of the Sisters of Charity in 1828, where she further developed her desire to dedicate her life to the less fortunate. It was during her time as a novice that she began to see the dire conditions faced by the poor in her community.

Recognizing the urgent need for a more direct and structured approach to serving the marginalized, Maria Cristina received divine inspiration to establish her own religious congregation. In 1836, with the approval of her spiritual director, she founded the "Daughters of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption." This new order aimed to offer education and assistance to impoverished women and children, empowering them through knowledge and faith.

Under Maria Cristina's leadership, the congregation flourished. She emphasized the importance of charity, education, and spiritual formation, guiding her sisters to live out their vocation with joy and dedication. Her approach combined both contemplation and action, rooted in a deep love for Jesus Christ and a genuine concern for humanity.

The early years of the congregation were marked by challenges, but Maria Cristina's unwavering faith and commitment inspired her sisters to persevere. Maria Cristina Brando passed away on January 20, 1906. Her legacy lives on through the continued work of the Daughters of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption, which has grown into an international congregation dedicated to serving the poor and advocating for social justice.

In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Maria Cristina, recognizing her virtues and dedication to her mission. Canonization followed, affirming her place as a saint in the universal Church. Today, St. Maria Cristina Brando is remembered as a powerful advocate for the marginalized, inspiring many to live lives of compassion, service, and faith.
