Maria Josefa Karolina Brader

Maria Josefa Karolina Brader was born on July 8, 1844, in the small town of Götzis, Austria. From a young age, she felt a deep call to serve God and the community, motivated by a profound love for her faith. After receiving her initial education, which included formation in the Catholic faith, she discerned her vocation and sought to dedicate her life to the service of others.

In the mid-19th century, as Europe faced social upheavals and economic challenges, Maria Josefa saw the urgent need for a group that would not only provide spiritual guidance but also tangible assistance to those in need. She recognized that women could play a vital role in addressing these societal challenges, leading her to found the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate in 1874.

Under her leadership, the congregation grew quickly, gaining recognition for their tireless work with orphans, the sick, and the needy. Maria Josefa's emphasis on compassion, community, and devotion to the Virgin Mary became hallmarks of the Franciscan Sisters. They established schools, hospitals, and orphanages, serving countless individuals who had nowhere else to turn.
