Maria Katharina Kasper

Maria Katharina Kasper was born on May 26, 1820, in Dernbach, a small village in Germany. As the youngest of six children in a devout Catholic family, she was raised with a strong sense of faith and compassion for the poor. From a young age, Katharina exhibited a deep desire to serve those in need, often helping her parents care for the less fortunate in their community.

At the age of 16, she felt called to a religious vocation. Despite the limited options for women at that time, Katharina's spirit of service only grew stronger. Inspired by her faith and the needs of those around her, she began to assist her parish priest in various works of charity, focusing on education and the care of the poor. In 1851, with the encouragement of her spiritual director and some like-minded companions, she founded the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.
