Maria Pierina De Micheli

Maria Pierina De Micheli was born on February 2, 1890, in Milan, Italy, to an ordinary family, the second of eight children. From a young age, she exhibited a profound spirituality, often contemplating the mysteries of faith. Her family background instilled strong Catholic values in her, shaping her character and dedication to God.

At the age of 16, Maria felt a calling to religious life. After completing her education, she joined the Daughters of the Holy Cross in 1915, a congregation recognized for its commitment to education and service. She took the name Maria Pierina and devoted her life to the guidance and care of others, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare. Her work was not merely a profession; it was a deep expression of her faith and love for Christ, which she sought to instill in those around her.

During her time as a religious sister, Maria Pierina became known for her unwavering commitment to the Eucharist and her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. These two aspects of her spirituality were central to her life and mission. She advocated for the practice of Eucharistic adoration and encouraged others to seek consolation and guidance through the Virgin Mary.

In 1938, Maria Pierina had a profound mystical experience during a private prayer. She claimed that Jesus appeared to her in a vision, asking her to promote devotion to His Holy Face, a calling that she embraced with passion. This revelation emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the face of Christ as a reflection of God's love for humanity. It became a central theme in her ministry, leading her to establish the Holy Face devotion, which focuses on recognizing the suffering and love of Christ through His passion.

Throughout her life, Maria Pierina faced various challenges, including health struggles that tested her commitment to her vocation. Despite these trials, she remained steadfast and dedicated to her mission. Her resilience and faith served as a model for her fellow sisters and those she served.
