Maria Romero Meneses

Born on January 13, 1914, in Granada, Nicaragua, Maria Romero Meneses grew up in a loving and devout family. Her early life was marked by an enthusiasm for faith and a deep desire to serve others. As a young girl, she was drawn to the Salesian spirit inspired by St. John Bosco, who emphasized the importance of education and kindness towards the youth. Maria discerned her vocation early, feeling a strong call to dedicate her life to God and the wellbeing of children.

In 1934, at the age of 20, she joined the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Salesian Sisters. Her formation was filled with challenges, yet her joyful spirit and resilience shone through. She took her vows in 1937, embracing her role as a religious sister wholeheartedly. With a natural talent for connecting with young people, Maria became a teacher, working tirelessly to provide education and support for the underprivileged.

Maria’s teaching career began in Nicaragua, but her mission eventually took her to Costa Rica, where she spent over 30 years. In her new home, she founded the Salesian Institute in San José, which became a beacon of hope for many young girls. Through her innovative teaching methods and personal connections, she empowered them to rise above their difficult circumstances. She was known for turning her classroom into a nurturing environment, filled with love, faith, and the joy of learning.

A hallmark of Maria's ministry was her deep compassion, often going beyond her educational duties to address the emotional and spiritual needs of her students. She listened to their stories, offered guidance, and provided a steady presence during turbulent times. Her infectious joy inspired those around her; she often referred to the idea that "a smile can change the world," truly embodying this belief in her daily interactions.

In 2014, she was canonized by Pope Francis, honoring her years of service and dedication to God and His children. Today, she is celebrated as a model of joy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the mission of the Church, particularly in the service of the young. Her feast day is celebrated each year on July 7, a reminder of her lasting impact on the Church and society.
