Maria Teresa Scrilli

Maria Teresa Scrilli was born on March 26, 1825, in Pistoia, Italy, into a deeply religious family that nurtured her early spiritual life. As a child, she displayed a remarkable sensitivity to the suffering of others, often reaching out to help those in need. After the death of her father when she was just ten, Teresa’s family faced economic hardships, which only strengthened her resolve to support the less fortunate.

In her late teens, Teresa felt called to serve God through a religious life dedicated to education and charitable works. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph, where she embraced her vocation with fervor. Realizing that many young girls were denied education and opportunities due to their impoverished conditions, she became particularly passionate about establishing a school where girls could receive quality instruction and learn the virtues of faith and charity.

Teresa founded the Institute of Sisters of St. Joseph of Pistoia in 1851. Under her guidance, the institute focused on the holistic education of girls, combining academic teachings with moral and spiritual formation. She emphasized the importance of teaching young girls not just to read and write but to lead virtuous lives grounded in Christian values. Her sincere and loving approach to teaching profoundly impacted the many students who passed through her doors.

Throughout her life, St. Maria Teresa faced numerous challenges. She tirelessly worked to recruit and train others to join her mission, often encountering resistance from those who doubted women's roles in education and leadership. Nevertheless, through her unwavering spirit and faith, many women were inspired to join her cause and serve the community alongside her.

As a direct result of her dedication, the institute grew and expanded, becoming an integral part of the local community. Teresa's reputation for compassion and her charitable work in various missions extended beyond education; she took care of the poor and the sick, embodying Christ’s love in her service.

Her leadership was characterized by kindness, humility, and a profound understanding of the struggles faced by those she served. Maria Teresa was not just a teacher but a motherly figure, mentoring young women not only in academic pursuits but in the deeper journey of faith.

Maria Teresa Scrilli passed away on November 14, 1889, in Pistoia, her dedication and love for God leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she served. In recognition of her significant contributions to education and her unwavering compassion for the poor, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 10, 2001. Her feast day is celebrated on November 14.
