Maria Theresia Scherer

Maria Theresia Scherer was born on January 18, 1846, in the picturesque Swiss town of St. Gallen. The daughter of a baker, she was imbued with a deep sense of faith from an early age, particularly influenced by her mother, who was known for her piety and compassion. Sensing a divine call, Maria Theresia felt drawn to religious life and dedicated herself to serving others, particularly the disadvantaged.

In 1863, at the age of 17, she entered the convent of the Sisters of Charity in the same town, where she would embrace her vocation wholeheartedly. During her formation, Maria Theresia exhibited an extraordinary joy and energy that set her apart. Her superiors recognized her potential and encouraged her enthusiasm for community service. She would often lead her fellow sisters in charitable endeavors, emphasizing that their mission was to bring the joy of Christ to those they served.

Her commitment to the poor and marginalized became the hallmark of her mission. Maria Theresia worked tirelessly in various outreach programs, offering her time and resources to those in need. She was particularly devoted to the education and care of disadvantaged children, believing that every child deserved the opportunity for a better life. Her compassion was luminous, as she had the remarkable ability to make each person she encountered feel valued and loved.

In 1885, recognizing the need for religious education and the urgent call to serve the marginalized, Maria Theresia envisioned the establishment of an order dedicated to this mission. With the support of her fellow sisters, she founded the “Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul” in St. Gallen. Under her guidance, the order flourished, and began to establish schools and hospitals, reaching into communities that lacked access to such essential services.

Maria Theresia's spiritual life was characterized by deep prayer and a vibrant, infectious joy that inspired everyone around her. She believed that joy was a crucial aspect of one’s faith and took great care to foster a spirit of happiness among her sisters. Despite facing the challenges of leading a new order, which included financial difficulties and external opposition, her unwavering faith in God’s providence enabled her to persevere.

Sadly, after years of dedicated service, her health began to decline. Maria Theresia passed away on June 16, 1922, but not without leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched. Following her death, she was widely revered for her commitment to the poor and her joyful spirit.

In recognition of her profound impact on the Church and her community, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 7, 1996. Her legacy continues to inspire countless individuals to embody the joy of serving others, and her order remains active today, carrying on her mission of compassion, education, and charity.
