Marie Rose Durocher

Marie Rose Durocher was born on October 6, 1811, in a small village near Montreal, Canada. The daughter of a farmer, she grew up in a devoutly Catholic household where the values of faith and community were deeply instilled in her from a young age. After her mother’s death in 1819, Marie Rose took on additional responsibilities within her family, shaping her character into one of strength and compassion.

Her desire to serve God and the community became evident during her youth. At the age of 19, she began to teach catechism to local children, which ignited a passion for education. She recognized that education was not merely a means to academic knowledge but a vital tool for spiritual development. This revelation led her to consider a religious life dedicated to the instruction of youth.

In 1837, Marie Rose joined the Congregation of Notre Dame, a community focused on education and the spiritual formation of young people. Her dedication and ability to connect with children were remarkable, and she quickly became known for her innovative teaching methods and her genuine love for her students. It was during her time with the Congregation that she encountered the profound need for more structured educational systems within the rapidly growing urban environments of Canada.

Fueled by her vision, Marie Rose founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1843 in Longueuil, Quebec. This religious congregation specifically aimed to provide quality education to girls, ensuring that they received a holistic formation that included both academic instruction and spiritual guidance. Under her leadership, the congregation expanded rapidly, establishing schools across Canada and eventually in the United States.

Marie Rose devoted her life to not only the development of educational institutions but also to the formation of her fellow sisters.
