Marija Petković

Marija Petković was born on January 24, 1892, in the small town of Blato on the island of Korčula, Croatia. From a young age, Marija exhibited a deep sense of piety, inspired by her family’s strong Catholic faith. Her parents, especially her mother, instilled in her the virtues of kindness and compassion, which would shape her future calling. Marija was particularly moved by the needs of the poor and the marginalized in her community, and she often sought ways to provide comfort and assistance to those in need.

In her late teens, Marija felt a profound desire to devote her life to God and service. After completing her schooling, she entered the convent of the Sisters of Mercy. It was here that she fully grasped the depth of her calling and began her preparation to live a life dedicated to the service of others. Marija’s commitment to education and care for the disadvantaged became the hallmark of her vocations.

In 1923, Marija Petković founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy in the city of Split, with the aim of addressing the needs of the poor, particularly orphans and the elderly. Dedicated to educating girls and providing them with opportunities for a better future, her congregation also ventured into the realms of healthcare and social work. Under her guidance, the Daughters of Mercy established numerous educational institutions, hospitals, and orphanages throughout Croatia and beyond, all while fostering a strong sense of community among the sisters.

Her leadership was characterized by humility and a relentless drive to serve. Marija often encouraged her fellow sisters to live the values of mercy, love, and compassion as they interacted with the vulnerable. She firmly believed in living out the Christian call to charity, often reminding her congregation that they were to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. Marija was known to visit the poor personally, providing not just material support, but also spiritual encouragement.

Throughout her life, Marija faced significant challenges, including the turmoil brought by World War II. During this time, she worked tirelessly to protect members of her community, offering refuge to those who were persecuted and in danger. Her courage and tenacity were instrumental in preserving the faith and hope of those around her during these dark times.

In 1957, Marija Petković passed away, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire countless individuals and religious communities. Her work, marked by a profound sense of mercy, has left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church in Croatia and beyond. The Congregation of the Daughters of Mercy continues to thrive, dedicated to Marija's original mission of love and service.

Marija was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 6, 1998, acknowledging her virtuous life and significant contributions to the Church. Her feast day is celebrated on July 9, a time for the faithful to remember her unwavering commitment to mercy and service. Marija Petković's life is a testament to the transformative power of faith in action, a model for all who strive to live out the teachings of Christ through charitable works.
