Matthew Nguyễn Văn Ðắc

St. Matthew Nguyễn Văn Ðắc was born in Vietnam in the late 18th century, into a society that was beginning to clash with the growing presence of Christianity. As the son of devout Catholic parents, he received a strong foundation in the faith from an early age. His upbringing instilled in him a profound love for God and a desire to serve others, which would later define his life and legacy.

Matthew was deeply influenced by the teachings of the Church and felt called to become a catechist, sharing his faith with his fellow villagers. His commitment to the faith did not go unnoticed; he became a respected figure in his community, guiding others in their spiritual journeys. His work included educating children and adults about Christianity, often at great personal risk, as severe persecution against Christians in Vietnam was intensifying.

As the French colonial authorities clashed with the local populace, the situation for Christians became dire. Many faced imprisonment, torture, and death for their beliefs. In this volatile environment, Matthew remained steadfast in his faith, courageously preaching the Gospel and standing in solidarity with fellow Christians who endured persecution. In 1837, Matthew was arrested during one of the waves of persecution against Christians. He was summoned to renounce his faith publicly, a demand that put him in direct conflict with his deeply held convictions. Despite threats and the promise of a more comfortable life if he recanted, Matthew refused to abandon Christ. He was resolute in his belief that his life and actions should reflect the teachings of Jesus, even at the cost of his life.

The authorities subjected him to severe torture, attempting to break his spirit. Yet, throughout his ordeal, Matthew remained a source of inspiration and strength for his fellow prisoners.
