Michał Kozal

Michał Kozal was born on September 24, 1904, in the village of Różan, Poland. From a young age, he exhibited a strong sense of faith and a desire to serve God. After completing his secondary education, he entered the seminary in Poznań and was ordained a priest in 1927. His early ministry was marked by a deep dedication to his parishioners, focusing on education and social issues, especially in the post-World War I era when Poland sought to rebuild its national identity.

In 1940, with the invasion of Poland by Nazi forces, Michał’s commitment to his faith and his parishioners was put to the ultimate test. He was appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Włocławek in 1941, but during this time, the German occupation subjected him and his community to severe persecution. Bishop Kozal took a stand against the oppressive policies imposed by the Nazis, advocating for the rights of Catholics and defending the Church's teachings. He engaged in pastoral activities despite the risks involved, encouraging his flock to remain steadfast in their faith.

In 1941, Bishop Kozal was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned for his outspoken opposition to the regime. His resilience during this time reflected his deep commitment to his faith and his unwavering belief in justice. He endured tremendous suffering and hardship while in captivity, yet he remained a source of hope for the Polish faithful, often encouraging them through the letters he managed to send from prison.

Bishop Kozal was eventually transferred to the infamous Dachau concentration camp in 1943. There, he continued to inspire those around him with his faith and courage. He tended to the spiritual needs of fellow prisoners, offering them guidance and support in their darkest hours. His actions demonstrated a profound ability to find hope amidst despair, and he exemplified the virtue of charity, serving even those who were his captors.

Tragically, Michał Kozal's life was cut short when he succumbed to the brutal conditions of Dachau on January 26, 1943, a day that would later be commemorated as his feast day. His martyrdom not only stands as a testament to his faith but also highlights the extreme sacrifices made by many during that dark period in history.

In the years following his death, Bishop Kozal’s legacy has continued to inspire countless individuals. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987, recognized for his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church in the face of persecution.
