Michael Rua

St. Michael Rua was born on June 9, 1837, in Turin, Italy, into a humble family dedicated to the Catholic faith. From an early age, he displayed a love for God and a deep desire to serve others. Encouraged by a local priest, Rua entered the Salesian Congregation founded by St. John Bosco, who recognized his potential and zeal for education.

As a young cleric, Rua was profoundly influenced by St. Bosco's vision of education, which combined spiritual formation with practical skills. He became an ardent supporter of Bosco's approach, dedicating himself to the pastoral care of youth and fostering their growth in faith. He played a pivotal role in establishing schools, oratories, and centers for disadvantaged children, embodying the Salesian spirit of joy and service.

When St. John Bosco passed away in 1888, Rua was appointed as his successor as the Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation. Under his leadership, the congregation expanded its reach, establishing new schools and initiating programs aimed at uplifting youth across Italy and beyond. Rua's focus on education, vocational training, and a loving community environment became hallmarks of the Salesian mission.

Throughout his life, St. Michael Rua faced various challenges, including opposition from secular authorities and societal changes that threatened the traditional educational values he championed. Despite these difficulties, his unwavering faith and dedication to his mission never wavered. He worked tirelessly, believing that every child deserved an opportunity for a brighter future, grounded in faith and moral values.

St. Michael Rua's commitment to youth was not merely professional but deeply personal. After years of dedicated service, St. Michael Rua passed away on April 6, 1910, in Turin. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Salesians and educators worldwide. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 29, 2001, recognizing his profound impact on the Church and the lives of countless youth. St. Michael Rua is remembered not only as a devoted priest but also as a compassionate mentor and guardian of young hearts.
