Who they were
Michal Tomaszek was born on September 29, 1950, in the small village of Lublin, Poland. From a young age, Michal felt a profound calling to the priesthood. He pursued his education at the Major Theological Seminary in Kraków, where he deepened his understanding of the faith and committed himself to serving God and his community. After his ordination in 1975, Michal joined the Franciscan Order, dedicating himself to a life of prayer and service.
In the 1980s, Michal and his fellow friars received a missionary call to serve in Peru, a country facing significant socio-political turmoil. He arrived in the Andean region of Peru in 1988, where he worked tirelessly to minister to the impoverished and marginalized communities. Michal displayed remarkable compassion, tirelessly advocating for the poor and bringing hope to those suffering from violence and oppression.
His commitment to his faith and his community did not go unnoticed. As the Peruvian civil conflict escalated, particularly with the rise of the terrorist group Shining Path, the atmosphere became increasingly dangerous for missionaries and religious workers. Michal and his fellow friars continued their work, undeterred by the dangers surrounding them, believing firmly in their mission to spread love and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
On August 9, 1991, the Shining Path kidnapped Michal along with two other friars, Zbigniew Strzalkowski and Juan Carlos Oldershaw. They were taken from their parish in Pariacoto, a town in the Ancash region. Despite the threats to their lives, Michal remained steadfast in his faith. Rather than abandon his mission or flee, he chose to stand firm in his commitment to serve those in need.
In the days following their abduction, Michal and his companions were brutally murdered. The terrorists sought to instill fear in those who dared to oppose them, but instead of terror, their martyrdom inspired many throughout the Church and beyond. Michal's final acts were defined by unwavering faith and love, reflecting the core tenets of his Franciscans beliefs.
Michal Tomaszek was beatified on December 5, 2015, along with his fellow martyrs, recognized by the Church as having given their lives in witness to their faith.
