Miguel Pro was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Mexico, into a large and devout family. From an early age, he exhibited a strong sense of faith and a lively spirit. Miguel was one of eleven children, and his upbringing in a loving Catholic home nurtured his deep love for God and the Church. Following his passion for the priesthood, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1911.
His early formation as a Jesuit took place in the midst of significant turmoil in Mexico, where a fierce anti-Catholic wave led to the Cristero War. He was sent to the United States to complete his theological studies due to the oppressive climate in Mexico, where Catholics faced severe persecution. Miguel’s studies took place in California and then in Detroit, where he was ordained a priest on August 31, 1925.
Upon returning to Mexico, Miguel faced the harsh reality of a country where practicing the faith had become dangerous. The Mexican government, under President Plutarco Elías Calles, aggressively persecuted Catholics, closing churches, exiling priests, and punishing those who dared to express their faith. Despite this, Miguel Pro was determined to serve his people, frequently ministering to them in disguise to avoid government detection.
Known for his joyful demeanor and unwavering commitment to his faith, Miguel used humor and compassion to uplift those around him during this dark period. He took on various roles to encourage the faithful, organizing clandestine Masses, distributing Communion, and granting the Sacrament of Confession to those who sought it. In November 1927, Miguel was arrested on false charges of being involved in a bomb attack aimed at the callista government. Even under the threat of death, he remained resolute in his faith. In his last hours, he was defiant, proclaiming "Viva Cristo Rey!" ("Long live Christ the King!") as he faced execution on November 23. The priests who were witnesses to his martyrdom later recounted that he died with remarkable courage and peace.
Miguel Pro was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988, and canonized on May 21, 2000. His feast day is celebrated on November 23, and he is remembered not only for his martyrdom but also as a symbol of faith and resilience in the face of persecution.
