Modeste Andlauer

St. Modeste Andlauer was born on May 27, 1663, in Chalons, France. After completing his studies and joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained a priest and felt a deep calling to become a missionary. In 1686, he sailed to the New World, where he would serve the Jesuit mission in North America.

Settling in Canada, specifically in the area now known as Quebec, Modeste quickly immersed himself in missionary work among the Indigenous peoples. His approach was characterized by genuine respect and love for those he served. He learned their languages and customs, fostering a deeper understanding and connection as he shared the Gospel. Modeste's dedication to his mission was unwavering; he often faced challenging conditions and hostility, yet he remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his calling.

In 1701, Modeste was assigned to a mission in the heart of New France, which brought him into contact with various tribes. His time there was marked by a tireless effort to evangelize and educate, often at great personal risk.
