Moisés Lira Serafín

Moisés Lira Serafín was born on March 1, 1900, in the town of Valles, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, Moisés was deeply influenced by the faith of his parents, who instilled in him the values of kindness, humility, and service to others. From a young age, he felt a strong calling to the priesthood, inspired by the example of local clergy and the teachings of the Church.

After completing his studies at the seminary, Moisés was ordained a priest on July 9, 1927. He began his pastoral ministry in various parishes, where his dedication to his parishioners quickly became evident. He was tireless in his efforts to serve the needs of the community, often going above and beyond to provide spiritual and practical support. He offered catechism classes, visited the sick, and organized charitable initiatives to aid the poor, embodying the pastoral spirit of the Church.

The socio-political climate in Mexico during this time was tumultuous, especially for the Church. Anti-Catholic sentiments were rising, leading to extreme persecution of clergy and believers. Despite these challenges, Moisés remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his vocation. His resolve to serve God and his community never wavered, even as conditions grew more dangerous.

On April 28, 1938, Moisés was arrested for his outspoken defense of the faith and for continuing to celebrate the sacraments in defiance of government restrictions. He was imprisoned and faced harsh treatment, yet he maintained an attitude of hope and compassion, even for his captors. He encouraged fellow prisoners to stay strong in their faith and frequently offered prayers for their strength. Moisés remained an unwavering light of Christian love amidst the darkness of persecution.

Tragically, Moisés was executed on June 25, 1938, but his legacy of courage and compassion lived on. He was recognized for his martyrdom; his beatification took place on November 20, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI. This honor acknowledged not only his sacrifice but also his exemplary life as a shepherd who truly cared for his flock.
