Nicola Saggio

Nicola Saggio, also known as Saint Nicholas of Myra, lived during the 4th century in Asia Minor, in a region now part of modern-day Turkey. He was born into a wealthy family and was raised in a devout Christian home. Orphaned as a young man, he inherited a significant fortune, which he used to help the needy, particularly children. This early display of compassion foreshadowed his lifelong commitment to charitable acts.

As a priest and later the Bishop of Myra, Nicola became known for his dedication to the Church and his staunch defense of Christian doctrine. He was a prominent figure at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where he worked alongside other bishops to combat the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. His courageous stands for the faith earned him a place as one of the most revered leaders of his time.

Throughout his life, Nicola was known for performing miracles, which further reinforced his reputation among the faithful. Stories of his miraculous deeds spread widely, with notable accounts including calming storms at sea and restoring life to three murdered children, who had been hidden in a barrel by an evil innkeeper. His reputation as a miracle worker only deepened after his death, when he continued to intercede for those who sought his help.

Nicola's legacy also embraced a strong commitment to education and the wellbeing of youth, leading to his enduring status as the patron saint of children, sailors, and numerous other groups. His feast day on December 6th became a time for celebration and gift-giving, which later evolved into the modern-day celebration of Christmas.

Saint Nicola Saggio died on December 6, 343 AD, and was buried in his cathedral in Myra. His remains were later taken to Bari, Italy, where they continue to be housed as an object of veneration. His life of generosity and faith continues to inspire countless individuals today, reminding us to embody love and compassion in our daily lives.
