He felt a strong calling to the priesthood and, after completing his studies at the seminary, was ordained a priest on June 1, 1916. Maldonado was appointed to the parish of San Juan Bautista in the small town of Colotlán. Here, he worked tirelessly to serve his community, often walking long distances to visit the sick and those in need. In his last act of service, on February 10, 1937, Pedro de Jesús Maldonado was arrested by government forces.
