St. Peregrine

St. Peregrine Laziosi was born around 1260 in the Italian city of Forlì into a wealthy family. His early years were marked by a fervent involvement in the anti-papal faction, a movement that sought to challenge the authority of the Church. In a significant turning point during this turbulent period, Forlì came under interdict, barring the celebration of church services. Pope Martin IV sent St. Philip Benizi to intervene, offering peace and reconciliation. During one of St. Philip's sermons, an impulsive eighteen-year-old Peregrine struck him in the face. This act of violence prompted a profound change within him. Confronted by St. Philip's calm forgiveness, Peregrine experienced a deep conversion, ultimately embracing Catholicism.

After his conversion, Peregrine joined the Servite Order in Siena, where he took the name Pellegrino Laziosi. His commitment to his new life was evident as he dedicated himself to prayer and penance. Ordained as a priest, he returned to Forlì with the purpose of establishing a community for the Servite Order. His fervent preaching and unwavering dedication to the sick and poor earned him respect and admiration within his community. Peregrine's life was characterized by a deep faith and an unyielding commitment to living out the virtues of humility and service.

One key episode in Peregrine's life occurred when he was sixty years old. He developed a cancerous ulcer on his right leg that threatened his very existence. Just before a scheduled amputation, he prayed fervently before a crucifix, seeking divine intervention. In a moment described as a vision, he encountered Christ and was assured of healing. The following day, much to the amazement of those around him, the cancer was miraculously gone, and the amputation was no longer needed. This miraculous event not only marked a pivotal moment in his life but also established him as a powerful intercessor for those suffering from similar ailments.

Throughout his life, Peregrine practiced strict self-discipline, often imposing severe penances on himself. His unusual habits included standing whenever possible, which led to varicose veins. This dedication to penance and his wise counsel earned him admiration, with many referring to him as the "Angel of Good Counsel." Although he was a man of deep spiritual strength, Peregrine's life was not free from suffering. His battle with cancer served as a testament to his faith, and he consistently sought comfort through prayer during his trials.

St. Peregrine passed away on May 1, 1345, at the age of eighty-five due to a fever. His death was not a martyr's end, but rather a natural one, reflecting the trials often endured by the faithful. His legacy continued to flourish after his death, and he was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1609, later canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.

Today, St. Peregrine is venerated as the patron saint of those suffering from cancer, AIDS, and other serious illnesses. His patronage arose from his own miraculous healing and the countless instances of his intercession on behalf of the sick. He is often depicted in sacred art with a bandaged or wounded leg, symbolizing both his suffering and his miraculous healing. His life of faith, dedication, and perseverance serves as an inspiration, especially for those facing grave health challenges.
