Their life

Who they were

Peregrine Laziosi was born in 1260 in the small town of Forli, Italy. From a young age, he was known for his spirited nature and strong personality, qualities that sometimes led him into conflict. As a youth, he joined the local militia and was known for his fierce defense of the Guelph party against the Ghibellines, supporting the Pope during Italy's complicated political struggles.

Peregrine's life took a transformative turn when he encountered St. Philip Benizi, who was part of the Servite Order. St. Philip’s compassionate approach and deep spirituality prompted Peregrine to reconsider his priorities in life. He gradually moved away from his combative lifestyle, embracing a path of peace and contemplation. In 1285, he joined the Servites, a religious order devoted to the Virgin Mary, and committed himself to a life of prayer, service, and humility.

His dedication, however, was tested in 1287 when he developed a serious illness—cancer in his right leg. The disease brought him immense pain and suffering, and it quickly became apparent that amputation was necessary. Before the surgery, Peregrine spent a night in prayer, imploring God for healing. In a miraculous event, he awoke the next morning to find his leg completely healed, with no signs of the disease. This profound experience deepened his faith and transformed his life, leading him to become the patron of those suffering from cancer and other serious ailments.

Following his miraculous healing, Peregrine devoted his life to helping others in similar distress. He became known for his compassion and dedication, visiting the sick and comforting those in fear. His ministry included preaching and serving the community, and he was eventually appointed as the prior of the Servite monastery in Forli. Peregrine continued to live a life of service until his death on May 1, 1345, after a long battle with illness and some time spent in prayer and reflection.

Peregrine was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1726, solidifying his place as a saint recognized for his compassion and intercessory power. His feast day is celebrated on May 1, and he is especially invoked by those struggling with cancer and other chronic illnesses. Through his life and the miracles attributed to him, St. Peregrine embodies hope, resilience, and the belief in the power of prayer, encouraging countless individuals to face their sufferings with faith. His legacy continues today, bringing comfort and healing to many who find solace in his intercession.
