St Peter Julian Eymard

Saint Peter Julian Eymard was born on February 4, 1811, in La Mure, Isère, France, into a devout family with strong religious convictions. He was the youngest of ten children, though tragically, eight of his siblings died in infancy. His father, a blacksmith, and mother, deeply pious, fostered a spiritual environment that would shape Peter's early years. From a young age, he nursed a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was known to make pilgrimages to her shrines throughout France. His First Communion on March 16, 1823, marked a significant turning point in his life, solidifying his desire to serve as a priest. Despite facing initial opposition from his father regarding his vocational aspirations, he entered the seminary of the Diocese of Grenoble in 1828.

Eymard's journey toward the priesthood faced hurdles, including health issues that necessitated a temporary leave from the seminary. However, following the death of his father in 1831, he was able to return to his studies, and he was ordained a priest on July 20, 1834. His early ministry began as an assistant pastor in Chatte and later as the pastor of Monteynard. In 1839, he joined the Marist Fathers, a congregation dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This period was marked by a commitment to education, preaching, and nurturing lay organizations aimed at promoting devotion to both the Blessed Virgin and the Eucharist, particularly through the Forty Hours Devotion.

In 1849, a transformative encounter with the Association of Nocturnal Adorers in Paris ignited a deep passion within Eymard for Eucharistic adoration. This experience inspired him to envision a religious community wholly dedicated to the reverent worship of the Eucharist. His ideals materialized when, with the approval of the Paris bishops, he founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856, focusing on fostering a profound love and reverence for the Eucharist among the faithful.

Two years later, in 1858, Eymard founded the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, extending his mission to women. Throughout his life, he was characterized by deep spirituality, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the Eucharist. His contemporaries described him as a man of profound faith and pastoral zeal, tirelessly promoting frequent Communion among the laity. Despite suffering from health challenges, including persistent lung issues and debilitating migraines, Eymard remained steadfast in his mission until his death on August 1, 1868, in La Mure, France.

Following his passing, Eymard was initially buried in La Mure's cemetery; however, in 1877, his remains were transferred to the Corpus Christi Chapel in Paris, associated with the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. His dedication and leadership led to his beatification on July 12, 1925, by Pope Pius XI, followed by canonization on December 9, 1962, by Pope John XXIII. His feast day is celebrated on August 2, and he has become the patron saint of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
