Peter of Tarentaise

Peter of Tarentaise, also known as Saint Peter of Tarentaise, was born in 1102 in the region of Monticule, close to Tarentaise, France. His early life was marked by a deep sense of spirituality and a commitment to the Christian faith, which he and his parents instilled in him. Peter was particularly influenced by the Cistercian monastic movement that emphasized detachment from worldly possessions and a focus on prayer, solitude, and community.

At the age of 20, drawn by a powerful sense of vocation, Peter entered the struggling Cistercian Abbey of Bonloc in the foothills of the Alps. Here, he flourished under the guidance of Abbot Aymon. Peter's dedication to monastic life was evident; he embraced the simplicity and austere lifestyle that the Cistercians preached, becoming a model of humility and service. His commitment to the monastic community eventually led him to become abbot of the monastery, a position he held until his departure for more significant responsibilities.

In 1136, Peter was appointed as the abbot of the Abbey of Hautecombe, where he continued to embody the virtues of contemplative prayer and community service. His leadership was marked by a focus on both spiritual growth and practical support for the local community. Peter was instrumental in establishing the abbey as a center of learning and charity, offering assistance to those in need, regardless of their social standing. This earned him respect not only within monastic circles but throughout the neighboring jurisdictions.

His reputation for holiness and wisdom reached beyond the walls of the abbey, and in 1150, Peter was called to a new role as the Archbishop of Tarentaise.
