St Pier Giorgio Frassati

Born on April 6, 1901, in Turin, Kingdom of Italy, Pier Giorgio Frassati was the son of Alfredo Frassati, an agnostic newspaper owner, and Adélaïde Ametis, a gifted painter. Growing up in a prominent family that was part of the Italian bourgeoisie, Pier Giorgio experienced the comforts of privilege; however, he was known for his humility and deep compassion for the less fortunate. His father was involved in national politics, serving in the Italian Senate, while his mother garnered recognition for her artistic talent, with works exhibited in Venice and acquired by King Victor Emmanuel III.

Pier Giorgio's education began at home before progressing to the Massimo D'Azeglio public school. Although he was by no means an exceptional student academically, he distinguished himself through his devout nature and steadfast commitment to his faith. In 1910, he made his first confession at the Church of Corpus Christi, followed by his First Communion in 1911 and Confirmation in 1915, experiences that deepened his spiritual life.

In 1919, Pier Giorgio became actively involved with Catholic Action, dedicating himself to social justice and charitable endeavors. His commitment to serving others blossomed when he joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic in 1922, adopting the name "Girolamo" in homage to Girolamo Savonarola. He embodied the teachings of the faith, famously declaring that "Charity is not enough; we need social reform." Pier Giorgio was not only a man of prayer but also action, inspiring others with his example as he worked tirelessly to uplift the poor and bring about social change.

His enduring spirit was described vibrantly by contemporaries, who noted his contagious joy and enthusiastic approach to life. He was aptly noted as "an explosion of joy," representing the boldness and purity that can be found in youthful hearts engaged in the service of God. His interests included mountaineering, a passion that rallied friends and peers alike around him, often leading to hikes in the beautiful Italian Alps.

Tragically, his vibrant life was cut short when he contracted poliomyelitis in 1925. After a brief yet severe illness, Pier Giorgio passed away on July 4, 1925, at the tender age of 24. His death left a deep impact on his family and community, revealing the extent of his commitment as friends and the poor he served attended his funeral, moved by the profound affection he had inspired in others.

Pier Giorgio's legacy extends far beyond the geographical confines of Turin. His beatification took place on May 20, 1990, by Pope John Paul II, and he was canonized on September 7, 2025, by Pope Leo XIV. Widely known as the "Man of the Eight Beatitudes," he has become the patron saint of students, young Catholics, and mountaineers, reflecting both his dedication to youth and his love for nature.

Today, schools, churches, and organizations carry his name, preserving the spirit of charity, joy, and social justice he embodied. His feast day is celebrated on July 4, and his life continues to inspire countless young people around the world to live out their faith with authenticity and joy.
