Rafaela Ybarra de Vilallonga

Rafaela Ybarra de Vilallonga was born on August 15, 1850, in the small town of Villalonga in the Province of Valencia, Spain. From a young age, she demonstrated a deep piety and a fervent love for God. Her family was well-to-do, but Rafaela's heart was drawn towards the less fortunate in her community. The spirit of charity was instilled in her from early childhood, often manifesting in her willingness to help neighbors and the poor around her, which foreshadowed her future vocation.

In her youth, Rafaela was profoundly influenced by the teachings of the Church, which emphasized love for one’s neighbor and social responsibility. After receiving her education, she felt a strong call to serve those in need. This call became a vital part of her life, motivating her to devote herself to charitable works. Despite societal norms that often limited women's roles, Rafaela boldly took initiatives to address the suffering she saw around her.

At the age of 29, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1883 in Madrid. This religious community was dedicated to education and the care of orphans. Rafaela aimed to provide not just shelter and sustenance, but also spiritual guidance and educational opportunities, believing that true empowerment came through knowledge and faith. Under her leadership, the sisters extended their ministries across Spain and beyond, touching countless lives.
