Sœur Catherine

Sœur Catherine, also known as Saint Catherine Labouré, was born on May 2, 1806, in Fain-lès-Montbard, France. She was the ninth of eleven children in a devout family. From a young age, Catherine felt a strong religious inclination, often spending her time in prayer and caring for others. After the death of her mother, she took on more responsibilities at home, but her desire to religious life grew stronger.

In 1830, Catherine joined the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Paris. Her life took a remarkable turn when she experienced visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The first vision occurred in the chapel of the convent in Rue du Bac, where Mary appeared to her on July 18, 1830, asking her to have a medal struck in her honor. This medal, known as the Miraculous Medal, would later be a source of immense consolation and healing for many.

Catherine faced skepticism from her fellow Sisters and clergy when she first shared her vision, but she remained steadfast in her mission. She meticulously followed Mary’s instructions regarding the design and message of the medal, which included the invocation, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The medal was minted, and soon after its distribution, countless miracles were reported.

Despite these extraordinary experiences, Sœur Catherine lived a humble and hidden life in the convent. She dedicated herself to prayer, service, and the care of the sick and poor. Her life in the convent was marked by profound humility, as she embodied Christ's call to serve others without seeking recognition or glory.

Catherine Labouré passed away on December 31, 1876, in Paris. Her remains were laid to rest in the chapel where she had first encountered the Virgin Mary, and her influence continued to grow posthumously. In 1933, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI, and her feast day is celebrated on July 17.
