Thérèse Couderc

Thérèse Couderc was born on February 1, 1805, in a small village in southwestern France. Raised in a devout Catholic family, she was deeply influenced by faith from a young age. Thérèse showed an early inclination toward spirituality and service, often assisting her parish and attending Mass regularly. Her strong sense of community and desire to support others were evident throughout her childhood.

As she matured, Thérèse remained dedicated to the spiritual life. In her early twenties, she became involved in various charitable activities, providing assistance to the less fortunate in her community. This experience reinforced her calling to serve God through others. In 1827, she joined a group of women who were similarly interested in deepening their spiritual lives and committed to educating youth in the Christian faith.

In 1840, along with her friend, Sister Marie-Louise de Jesus, Thérèse co-founded the Sisters of Cenacle, an order focused on spiritual renewal and education. The name "Cenacle" refers to the Upper Room where Jesus dined with His apostles, symbolizing community, prayer, and unity. Thérèse envisioned an institute that provided a space for retreat, spiritual development, and the education of young women, allowing them to grow in their faith and serve their communities.

Thérèse served as the first superior of the congregation and dedicated her life to the mission of the Sisters of Cenacle. Under her leadership, the community expanded, establishing houses not only in France but also in other countries, such as Belgium and Italy. The Sisters of Cenacle became known for their commitment to prayer, education, and spiritual retreats. Thérèse emphasized the importance of nurturing one's relationship with God through contemplation and community life.

Throughout her life, Thérèse faced various trials. She experienced illness that at times hindered her work, but her unwavering faith and resilience remained steadfast. Thérèse led by example, embodying the virtues of compassion, humility, and devotion that she instilled in her sisters. Her belief in the transformative power of prayer and the need for inner renewal resonated deeply within her community.

After a life dedicated to God and the betterment of her community, Thérèse Couderc passed away on September 26, 1885. Her legacy lived on through the Sisters of Cenacle, who continue to serve in various educational and spiritual ministries around the world. In 1935, she was beatified by Pope Pius XI, and later, in 1970, Pope Paul VI canonized her as a saint, recognizing her significant contributions to the Church and her unwavering faith.
