Varghese Payyappilly Palakkappilly, commonly known as Blessed Varghese, was born on January 2, 1889, in the small village of Rajakkad in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. He grew up in a devout Christian family that nurtured his faith from an early age. Varghese was particularly fond of prayer and had a deep connection to the sacraments, often spending time in contemplation and service to others. His early life was marked by a strong commitment to his Catholic faith, which would later guide his vocation.

At the age of 19, Varghese felt a calling to the priesthood and pursued his studies at St. Joseph's Seminary in Mangalore. His passion for serving others was matched by a desire to lead a life of holiness. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1918, and took on responsibilities that would shape the lives of many. He was assigned to various parishes, where he focused on educational initiatives and pastoral care, helping the faithful grow in their understanding of the Gospel.
