Vincenzo Grossi

Vincenzo Grossi was born on March 9, 1845, in Castelnovo ne' Monti, Italy, to a humble family deeply rooted in faith. From an early age, he exhibited a profound dedication to his studies and a desire to serve others, particularly the marginalized. His early education took place at the seminary in Reggio Emilia, where he became increasingly aware of the pressing educational needs of children from impoverished backgrounds.

Ordained a priest in 1869, Grossi was assigned to the parish of St. Prospero in Reggio Emilia. It was during his years in this parish that he witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by many families, particularly those who could not afford proper education for their children. The stark reality of poverty and the lack of resources compelled him to take action. Grossi’s deep compassion and visionary spirit ignited a desire to create a sanctuary for learning and growth, and thus, the groundwork for his future endeavors began.

In 1876, Grossi founded the Institute of the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, a religious congregation dedicated to the education and welfare of children, particularly girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. His approach combined a robust Christian formation with a strong emphasis on educational excellence, ensuring that the congregation would be driven by the mission to uplift those in need through holistic education. Under his guidance, the institute rapidly grew, attracting numerous young women eager to join in the cause.

In addition to his work with the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, Grossi held multiple roles in the local church, including serving as a spiritual advisor and mentor to many clergy and laypeople. He committed himself fully to the pastoral care of his community, dedicating countless hours to teaching, counseling, and guiding individuals on their spiritual journeys.
