Virginia Centurione Bracelli was born into a noble family in Genoa, Italy, on April 2, 1587. At 16, she married a wealthy merchant, but her happiness was cut short by his untimely death just ten years later. In grief, Virginia sought solace in her faith and turned her efforts toward charitable works. She established the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Refuge in 1635, dedicated to serving the poor, particularly women and children.
