Today’s reflection

Very often, in the quiet moments of our lives, we find ourselves deeply longing for understanding... for some way to make sense of the world around us. It's as if a part of our soul aches for clarity, for truth that feels just beyond our reach. Perhaps you've felt it as you sip your morning coffee—pondering decisions left half-made. Or as you lay awake at night... listening to the silence, wondering if you missed something important in the noise of the day. This yearning is universal, an echo of our shared human story.
It brings to mind Paul's journey to Athens, as we hear in today's reading from Acts. Picture Paul amongst the rich tapestry of shrines and altars dedicated to a myriad of deities. Athens, a city vibrant with philosophy and debate, where ideas were traded alongside goods. Yet amidst all the knowledge and ritual, there was an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown God.' A symbol, perhaps, of that deep-seated human longing to grasp the divine mystery.
Paul stands before the Athenians with a gentle boldness. He speaks of a God who isn't found in the confines of crafted images or temples but dwells in the expanse of existence itself—in the life and breath that form the poetry of our being. 'In him we live and move and have our being,' Paul declares, inviting us to imagine a God who is closer than the very air we breathe. Do we, in our own lives, recognize this nearness?
It's a profound invitation—to seek God not in distant, unattainable spaces but right here, where we find ourselves each day. To consider that our everyday, ordinary moments might be woven with threads of divine presence. It asks of us... a certain openness, a willingness to pause and truly see.
In our Gospel reading, Jesus speaks of the Spirit of truth who will guide us. There is so much more to understand, he tells his disciples, but it cannot all be revealed at once. This gentle unfolding is at the heart of our faith journey. Are we patient enough to receive it? Can we remain firm in trust when answers do not come as swiftly as we'd like?
Jesus promises that what is coming, though not yet fully understood, will be revealed in time. The Spirit, who speaks not on its own but directly from the divine heart, will lead us into deeper truth and relationship. It's a promise that can comfort us in our moments of doubt and uncertainty.
In these readings, there is an invitation to listen for God's voice in the midst of our questioning. To notice how we are being gently guided by the Spirit, even when clarity eludes us. Perhaps today, we might allow ourselves a few moments of stillness. To sit with our questions—the ones that linger quietly in our hearts—and offer them up in trust.
As we go through our day, let us try to be attentive to the whispers of the Spirit. Maybe we will hear it in the laughter of a friend, in the beauty of creation, or in the silent spaces where words have yet to form. Let us make room for the unknown, believing that even here, God continues to speak.
And as we end this time of reflection, may we carry forward the peace of knowing we walk this path of life embraced by a Love that calls us deeper, gently unveiling what we are ready to receive... when we are ready to receive it.
