Today’s reflection

Daily reflection

There are moments in life when we feel a deep longing... a thirst for something we can't quite name. The chaos of our daily routines, the noise that surrounds us... can make us feel like we're searching for clarity, for a sense of peace that seems elusive. Have you ever noticed how, even in a crowded room, you can feel profoundly alone? It's as though our hearts are longing for something that the world cannot quite satisfy.

In today's readings, we are reminded of this longing. "Like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk," we're told. There's an innocence in that image... a pure-hearted desire to be nourished by something that truly sustains us. The text invites us to approach God, the living stone, with that same sense of need. Rejected by the world, perhaps... but precious in His sight.

Imagine Bartimaeus, the blind man sitting by the roadside. He hears that Jesus is passing by, and with a heart full of longing, he cries out... "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." The crowd rebukes him, tells him to be silent. But sometimes, our longing refuses to be quieted... and this man's persistence is a beautiful testament to the faith that rests in deeply human yearning.

As Jesus stops and calls for Bartimaeus, the scene becomes profoundly intimate. "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asks... inviting Bartimaeus to name his deepest desire. The blind man simply replies, "Master, I want to see." It’s a plea not just for physical sight... but perhaps for a new way to see life, to see himself, to see hope.

We, too, have desires we may be reluctant to voice. Fears and hopes that we hold close, afraid of what might happen if we acknowledge them. Yet, these readings assure us that we are chosen, that we have been called out of darkness into wonderful light.

In our daily lives, we're asked to live as people of God—chosen and loved. To maintain a good conduct that reflects our inner transformation... that others might see our light and glorify God. It’s not always easy, though, is it? The war against worldly desires, the pull of the urgent over the important...

But in the quiet moments, God calls us to remember who we are. Like that first reading says, we were once not a people, but now... we are God’s people, having received mercy. We are asked to carry that identity into the world.

Today, perhaps we might pause and quietly ask ourselves, "What do I truly want?" Like Bartimaeus, can we name it before God and trust in His response? Can we hold that longing with open hands, and let His mercy and grace flow through the spaces between our fingers?

As we reflect on these readings, let's invite God's love and light into our lives. To move forward... following Jesus 'on the way,' trusting that our faith, even as small as a seed, can transform our vision.

And as we rest in that truth, may we find a stillness within—a peace that whispers the assurance of God's presence. Carry this peace with you... and let it guide your steps today. Amen.
