Today’s reflection

Sometimes in life, we find ourselves at crossroads — moments that demand more than we feel capable of giving. Perhaps you know the weight of those moments. The times when decisions loom large, and you cannot quite see the path ahead. It’s in these spaces of uncertainty that we often feel most alone, even as our hearts yearn for guidance and assurance.
Today’s readings invite us into such a moment. We stand with Elisha as he walks alongside Elijah, knowing that soon Elijah will be taken away. Imagine the ache in Elisha’s heart, the heaviness of impending loss. Elijah is not just a mentor, but a father figure, a spiritual guide in an uncertain world. And yet, the journey continues, step by step, without pause.
Elijah’s question to Elisha is simple yet profound: “Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” It’s an invitation into vulnerability. Elisha’s response is bold — “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.” In asking, Elisha reveals the depth of his longing and the courage it takes to voice our deepest desires.
This moment between them is both intimate and sacred, a handing over of legacy and spirit. When the chariot of fire separates them and Elijah is taken up, Elisha stands alone but not abandoned. He is left with the mantle of his mentor and the promise of God’s presence. “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asks, striking the water with the mantle. And the waters part...
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to the heart of our intentions. He invites us to look beyond the surface of our actions, to seek a deeper communion with God that thrives not on public display, but in the quiet, secret spaces of our lives. This is a call to authenticity — to give, pray, and fast not for the eyes of others, but for the eyes of God, who sees what is hidden.
How often do we find ourselves performing for the world, seeking approval and affirmation, rather than being honest about our struggles and our faith? Jesus gently reminds us that the reward we seek is not found in the applause of others but in the quiet assurance of being seen and known by our Heavenly Father.
In the tender depths of our hearts, we may carry fears and anxieties, the weight of responsibility, or the desire to be truly known and loved. These readings invite us to lay these before God, trusting that in our honest seeking, we find grace.
Perhaps today, we might find a moment to pause. To step away from the noise and the rush, and simply be. To enter into that inner room of our hearts and speak with God as Elisha did — with honesty and hope. What is it that you wish to ask for? What are the longings you dare to voice?
Let the words of Jesus guide us: to give without fanfare, to pray with sincerity, to fast with joy. Not for recognition, but for the quiet, hidden work of love that transforms us from within.
In the stillness, may we find the courage to pick up the mantle of faith, trusting that God walks with us even when the path is unclear. May we be gentle with ourselves and others, knowing that God’s grace is enough.
As we go about our day, let us carry the quiet assurance that we are not alone. Let us step forward with the promise of God’s presence, knowing that in the secret places of our hearts, we are seen, known, and deeply loved.
