Today’s reflection

There are moments, aren't there, when we find ourselves softly questioning... whether we've wandered too far from what truly matters. In the busy hum of daily life, we can feel disoriented, like we're missing some vital thread that holds everything together. It's as if the heart knows it longs for something deeper, yet the world keeps pulling us in a thousand different directions.
Today, as we sit with these ancient words from Hosea, there is a sense of urgency in the prophet’s voice. He speaks of people crafting their own paths... putting their trust in idols that offer nothing but emptiness. They made kings, but without God’s blessing, and created idols that led only to ruin. And in this text, we hear God’s sorrowful cry, ‘How long will they be unable to attain innocence in Israel?’
We can almost feel the weight of this longing. The longing of a God who desires closeness with His people... who aches for them to return to genuine relationship. And maybe, in our own hearts, we recognize some echo of this longing... a desire to return to simplicity, to faithfulness, to what is true and good.
The Gospel passage today brings us into the presence of Jesus, who meets a man unable to speak. This man, who had no words, who was bound by something within him... was set free. And the crowds, witnessing this simple, profound miracle, were amazed. Yet, still, the Pharisees doubted. They could not see what was unfolding right in front of them.
Jesus continued on. He went from place to place, teaching and healing—offering himself where there was need. And when he saw the crowds, he was moved... moved with pity, seeing their weariness, their longing for guidance, like sheep in search of a shepherd.
‘The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few,’ he quietly observed. And he invited his disciples into this vision of the world—a world in need of laborers who will nurture, who will care, who will draw others into the love of God.
As we sit with these words, we might feel a gentle stirring within us. A question... what are the idols we are holding onto? What are those things that promise fulfillment but leave us empty? And where is God inviting us to become laborers in His harvest?
Perhaps today, in the quiet moments, we can ponder these questions. Maybe we seek a small way to speak kindness into someone's day, or offer a listening ear to a friend. Perhaps we choose once more to trust... trust that God’s presence is enough, and that in His company, we lack nothing.
Let us, then, open our hearts to the gentle call of Jesus—not in grand gestures, but in the ordinary moments that make up our lives. And as we do, may we discover that the path back to God is not one we walk alone, but with a tender Shepherd, who has always been near.
In this companionship, in this gentle return, may we find the peace our hearts have been seeking all along.
