Today’s reflection

There are moments in life... when we feel deeply misunderstood. Perhaps... by those closest to us. We may try again and again to make our love known... and still, it might seem that our efforts fall short. It's in these times... that we begin to understand a little of the heartache present in today's readings.

In the Book of Hosea, we hear God speak tenderly... with a parent's heart. God recalls His love for Israel... since the days of their youth. How he called them... carefully guiding their steps, much like a parent teaching a child to walk. Yet despite all this... despite God's many invitations... Israel turned away, seeking other paths.

Have you ever felt the sting of rejection when your love... was not returned? Or the ache of seeing someone you care for... walk away down a path you know will cause pain?

And yet, even with this hurt... God chooses not to give in to anger. Instead, His heart... remains stirred with compassion. "I am God and not man," He says. God's mercy exceeds the bounds of human understanding... ever patient... ever forgiving.

Then, in our Gospel reading, we hear Jesus sending out His Apostles. He tells them to proclaim: "The Kingdom of heaven is at hand." It's as if Jesus redirects our focus... from our own woundedness... to the healing work that is needed... in the world around us.

Jesus doesn't send them unprepared. But rather... naked of all unnecessary comfort. "Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give." It's an invitation to trust... that God provides... even when we possess little. How profound... to think about relying solely on the abundance of God's grace.

As we enter a house... we are to wish peace upon it. Whether we depart with our peace accepted or returned, the focus remains on our mission of love and service.

Humanity often holds tightly to safety nets... yet Jesus asks us to let go... to travel light... both literally and spiritually. To exist in the world unencumbered... trusting His peace will lead us.

So how do we carry this message in our hearts today? Perhaps... it begins with recognizing where we hold back love... fearing rejection or misunderstanding. To ask ourselves... in what ways might God be calling us... to let go of our expectations and meet others with open hands and open hearts?

Maybe today... we can look for small acts of kindness... gestures of peace... perhaps to those who have turned away from us... even if we cannot see the immediate fruit.

And in these gentle acts... we join the Apostles, becoming bearers of the light and love of God's Kingdom...

May these words nurture our souls... as we walk forward, trusting in His providence.

Let us rest now... in this moment of grace. Knowing... we are held gently by the One who loves us deeper than we can imagine. Amen.
